![]() ![]() Because while all the Clockwork Century books are related - Priest, for instance, actually introduced "Wreck 'em" Sherman in the early pages of Boneshaker, though he served only as a passing character in that book - they're not linked in the traditional sequel sense of a single overarching story thread. ![]() ![]() Priest's world-building continues to be amazingly detailed and well-thought-out, and her descriptive powers - as always - had me feeling like I was there alongside "Wreck 'em," with a gas mask chafing at my skin and the poison-fog-muffled air making things quiet and claustrophobic.Įarlier, I mentioned the "real feel" of these books, which might sound weird applied to science fiction, but I keep coming back to that phrase when trying to put my finger on why this series really appeals to me. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s a bit ironic that this is the story of someone embarking on a grand project with impressive visions, but it got taken out of their hands, someone else took over and it became something else entirely, and yet this is pretty much what happened with this book and the original writers of this project. In one sense it possesses a dated almost 50/60s vibe about it and yet the issues it concerns is one that is timeless, and relatable to most readers. In many ways this seems to straddle the era of the old generation, Eisner, Kirby, Lee et al, and the new, revived and more complex experiments that really started to come to prominence throughout the 80s, Moore, Miller, Gaiman et al. ![]() The publishers are well aware of their audience, and often by adding all of these quirky and colourful extras it can be an effective way of distracting from often mediocre work elsewhere. There are no shortages of these graphic fiction/comic book reduxes out there on the market. One of the first things that becomes apparent about the art work is that it has a strange clash of retro with dated futurism to create quite an unsettling dystopia, which sets up the tone nicely. The similarity of these two books (both of them children’s’ books about bunnies) and their appearance in crucial moments of Vivian’s life (during her first inspiring experience with language and accompanying her only visitor while she’s on her deathbed) links them as a symbol and highlights their importance in the play. reads from The Runaway Bunny, a simplistic story about a bunny who wants to run away from home. offers to recite some Donne poems to Vivian, but Vivian (who is on morphine and barely coherent) refuses. ![]() Ashford, Vivian’s graduate school mentor, visits Vivian in the hospital, and she happens to bring along a children’s book- The Runaway Bunny-that she bought as a gift for her great-grandson. “Because of soporific!” the young Vivian exclaims. Indeed, a good portion of the story is based around the question of, “When will he ravish her?” Nyx initially lives each night in fear, believing her husband will claim his marital rights. Yet, time and again, the story returns to Nyx’s sexual desires. The worldbuilding here is fascinating, and that drew me in, as did the mystery behind the demon lord’s curse. The fourth part of Arcadia was set in the near future of 2019, with a global pandemic and widespread environmental collapse, and when writing these imagined horrors became too devastating, I stopped working to dream of something that was in many ways the narrative’s opposite: a colourful, playful opera. Finishing this novel felt urgent but also staggeringly heavy. My misery was compounded because I was working on my second novel, Arcadia, a book that I undertook in order to wrestle with the moral implications of bringing a child into a world in which climate change was intensifying. My study at the time had been carved out of our rickety, uninsulated, un-airconditioned garage, and writing out there in 37-degree heat while enormously pregnant was excruciating physical work.
